Electrical safety at home or in the workplace begins with
properly functioning safety devices. Residual Current Devices
(RCDs), commonly known as safety switches, are a critical
line of defence against electric shock and potential fire
hazards. Regular testing ensures these devices are working
as intended—protecting people, property, and equipment.
Performing a simple push-button test every six months along
with trip-time testing every twelve months, ensures your
safety switch is working correctly and can save lives.

Here’s how to perform a push-button test in just a few easy steps.

Step 1 – Locate the RCD
Find the safety switch in your switchboard. It will be labelled “RCD,” “Safety Switch,” or have a “T” or “Test” button.
Step 2 – Turn Off or Unplug Sensitive Equipment
Before testing, switch off or unplug devices such as computers, televisions, or any sensitive electronics. This prevents the risk of damage when the power supply is interrupted.
Step 3 – Press the Test Button
Press the “T” or “Test” button on the RCD.
The switch should immediately trip to the OFF position.
If the switch fails to trip, this is a strong indicator that the device may be faulty.
Contact a licensed electrician for further diagnosis and repair.
Step 4 – Confirm Power Interruption
Confirm that power has been cut to the protected circuits (e.g., lights, sockets).
Step 5 – Reset the RCD
Flip the RCD switch back to the ON position.
If it doesn’t reset, contact a licensed electrician.
If it does not reset or repeatedly trips, stop using the affected circuit and contact a licensed electrician for further diagnosis and repair.

Make It Routine
RCD testing should be part of your regular safety maintenance schedule. Energy Safe Victoria recommends performing the push-button test every six months and performing trip-time testing every twelve months. Please note that a licensed electrician is required for trip-time testing.
Setting reminders on your phone or calendar can help ensure it’s never overlooked.
